Oklahoma City Spring Cleaning Tips

Tyler Jorgensen

Spring is finally in the air, Oklahoma City! If you’ve spent winter huddled inside, now’s a great time to open those windows and begin thinking about spring cleaning. You might have your usual spring cleaning regimen, but all too frequently homeowners can skip over a few important tasks.

These are some pointers to get the most out of your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you can enjoy our favorite season in Oklahoma City.

Spring Clean Your Windows

Spring Cleaning Tips Oklahoma City

It’s common to get out of bed in the middle of March and realize that the less-than-stellar view out your window isn’t due to winter weather–it’s due to a grimy window. Spring is the perfect opportunity to deep clean your windows. Get that beautiful view back with the following steps.

  • If the window opens, open it all the way and clean out any dirt and dust in the sill or track. First remove as much as possible with the track dry, then wash with warm soapy water and a cloth or brush to clean out the rest. This helps your window open and close easier, and ensure your window can shut completely.

  • Spray the glass with a glass cleaner. You can use either a cleaner you buy at the store, or create a homemade cleaner using one part vinegar and two parts warm water.

  • Clean the glass with a microfiber cloth. Microfibers are the most effective at cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.

Don’t Neglect to Clean your Window Treatments

A spotless glass window isn’t worth much the window treatment isn’t just as clean.

For fabric window treatments like drapes or curtains, cleaning can be a hassle. For thick fabrics, remove them from the wall and take them outdoors to shake and get rid of any loose debris, then put them in the washer on a cold cycle and air dry them. For thinner window treatments, you’ll want to be more delicate in how you handle them, so wash them by hand in a sink or tub.

Plantation shutters are by far the easiest window treatment when it comes to cleaning. Get rid of dust by going once-over with a microfiber cloth or duster. For spot cleaning, use a slightly wet cloth to remove the stain, then dry with a cloth.

Give Some Love to Your Appliances

Your fridge, stove and dishwasher are as much pieces of furniture as they are appliances. Especially with modern appliances such as stainless steel appliances, looks are equally as important as function. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and get them back to the condition they were when you first bought them.

Stainless steel appliances can be shined up with a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, applied with a wet cloth and air-dried.

Get Every Single Surface

You’re probably going to give your floors and walls some much-needed TLC when you do your spring cleaning, but remember to spread that attention around to some of the most often neglected surfaces. These are just a few of the spots that are often forgotten when doing your spring cleaning:

  • Any handles or switches that hands touch. These could be on the toilet, doors, or anywhere else in your home.

  • All surfaces in your shower, including the door, floor, and soap ledge.

  • The top sides of ceiling fans.

  • Appliance undersides - specifically the big appliances such as your fridge164 and dishwasher.
